The price of “smelling great”

Research indicates that the scent of a product is one of the key drivers that draws in a consumer, be it a particular moisturiser, lip balm, or deodorant. If it smells good, it must be good, right? That’s the general understanding. Well, that’s not always the case.

In the beauty industry, the scents of a whole range of personal care products have been meticulously engineered in a lab and their uses are rather versatile. They might be used to camouflage a strong, undesirable odour. Or as bait to entice a certain “personality” of consumer.

Today, over 3000 chemicals are used to give a product its aroma, and the side effects of such chemicals range from dermatitis and tumours, to hormonal disruptions. Unfortunately the packaging merely says “fragrance”,  or “parfum”, without explaining what went into engineering it.

On a positive note, progressive companies are substituting synthetic fragrances with natural ingredients such a essential oils, which are concentrated oil extracts from various plants. Since the world is made up of so many plants and trees, entering the world of essential oils is like entering a treasure trove, where the benefits of these natural resources transcend mere aroma.

It is said that the world’s most popular aroma in the personal care product market is “floral”. The question remains - how often does it have natural origins?

At Aroha, you can be rest assured that the fragrance has not even a hint of a chemical in it.

Our woodsy variant has a heady mix of cedarwood, sweet orange and ylang ylang essential oils, perfectly blended to give off that earthy aroma. Ylang ylang extracted from the ylang ylang tree, has the additional benefit of being a natural antidepressant. Cedarwood encourages a healthier respiratory function. The use of essential oils ensures that the product not only smells good, but gets the benefit of certain therapeutic properties, hence making it much healthier!

With so many wonderfully fragrant essential oils available, it’s difficult to imagine how the world came to embrace artificial and synthetic fragrances, at all!

Have you tried Aroha’s natural non-toxic deodorants? We have three exciting variants!
